Book presentation Women Tattooed at BAUM Fest 2025

A special moment at the festival

The book presentation Women Tattooed will be one of the most inspiring highlights of BAUM Fest 2025. Marta Ponce, author and illustrator, invites us to discover a fascinating journey through the history of female tattooing with 20 unique mini-biographies that show the body as a living canvas, full of symbols and meanings.

Tattoos as a symbol of identity

Tattooing the skin has sparked fascination since the origins of humanity. More than a simple ornament, tattoos have been a sign of identity, spirituality, power, or resistance depending on the time and culture. But what happened to women who chose to get tattooed? This book rescues their stories and highlights the female role in an art often made invisible.

A journey through the history of female tattooing

From the first evidence in Ancient Egypt and traditional Japan to the famous “tattooed Venuses” who, between the 19th and 20th centuries, challenged social conventions in circuses and freak shows, each chapter becomes a window into lives full of rebellion and creativity.

Women who made history

Among its protagonists are the Woman of Gebelein, considered the oldest tattooed mummy in the world; Maud Wagner, pioneer and first recognized professional female tattooist; Betty Broadbent, famous for being the most tattooed woman of her time; and Olive Oatman, whose skin was marked by the Mojave tribe in the 19th century. Intense lives that reflect how tattooing has accompanied women in their search for freedom and self-expression.

A meeting with Marta Ponce

During the book presentation Women Tattooed, Marta Ponce will share this historical and artistic journey together with Viny, an emerging circus artist, in a conversation that promises to be as inspiring as it is moving. It will be an encounter where the audience can get to know the author, discover her creative process and understand how the collected biographies connect with our current vision of tattooing.

Date and place of the event

The event will take place on Saturday, October 4 at 4:00 p.m. at Fira de Barcelona Montjuïc (Hall 8).
